What is the Pelvic Floor?

Your pelvic floor muscles (because everyone has them) form the base of the group of muscles commonly called the ‘core.’ They run between your tailbone and the pubic bone within the pelvis. They are made of up layers of muscle and other tissue that stretch like a hammock from both the front to the back and from side to side within your pelvis, supporting your pelvic floor organs like your bowels, bladder, uterus etc.

What is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?

Pelvic floor physiotherapy simply means rehabilitation of pelvic floor musculature by means of Physical assessment. The assessment can be either external or internal depending upon the need and your comfort.

Your physiotherapist will formulate a plan of care for you based on your tone, strength and endurance and last but not the least- what is your “why”, your goal just like any other physical goals- for example- Running, lifting etc. The goals can look different for different people- for some it can be incontinence symptoms, for some it can be just pain relief!

What can I expect from Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?

What can I expect from my first appointment?

Your very first appointment will need you to complete a screening symptoms questionnaire which will help highlight your issues /complaints that you are seeking help for.

The first session is where there will be lots of talking! You and your pelvic PT will discuss the current complaints and issues you are experiencing, any related medical, surgical/pregnancy history and will try to understand your needs and goal setting from the pelvic floor Physiotherapy aspect.This will be followed by a detailed external and/or internal assessment.

Upon completion of an assessment, your physiotherapist will discuss a plan of care tailor made for you pertaining to fulfill your goals.

Do I need a referral?

You don't need a referral to see us. We will do a thorough assessment and if needed, we can talk to your doctor after your consent about your condition. We make sure to rule out all contraindications before starting the treatments.

Is Pelvic Floor Physio safe during pregnancy?

  • Yes, it is totally safe during pregnancy,
  • We will not do any internal palpation or treatment if your doctor suggested not to participate in intercourse due to any complications or you are not comfortable doing any internal treatment.
  • Our first priority is your comfort and consent, We can modify our treatment accordingly.

Do I need an internal exam?

An internal assessment provides your physiotherapist clinical information about your muscle tone, strength, endurance which can help determine the Direction of your treatment. Your physiotherapist will always prioritize your comfort and consent for the internal assessments the most. To answer the above question, an internal assessment is not needed if you do not feel comfortable, however it is highly recommended.

External assessments hold an irreplaceable value to physiotherapists as it can guide the treatment towards the completion of your goals.

What should I expect from an internal exam?

After the consent, we will do an internal exam. You will know the tone of the muscles (Hyper/Hypo), tension, reduce tension, assess the strength, and improve activation of muscles. With internal examination, we can directly assess the affected area and determine if exercises are done correctly. With the internal examination, progression is faster and the treatment plan is shorter.
